We want to inform our community that earlier today, our email system was used to send phishing emails from an employee account (Utility Officer Amber Polk – apolk@kilmarnockva.com).
The email may appear with the subject line “New File Access From Polk, Amber (OneDrive)” and includes a message stating that a document is ready for review via a OneDrive link.
We strongly advise the following tips for email security:
- DO NOT click on any links or open attachments from emails you do not recognize or were not expecting
- Do not enter personal or sensitive information into unfamiliar links
- Carefully review the sender’s email address and message content
We are aware that this type of phishing scam has recently impacted multiple organizations, and we are actively addressing the issue and securing our email system. There is no indication of any impact to financial or utility systems.
If you receive this email or any message that appears to be from our organization but you are unsure of its legitimacy, please contact our office directly by phone to verify before taking any action.
